About J80 Fleet 12 -Massachusetts

Fleet 12 covers all of Massachusetts and includes 25 boats along the 1500 miles of its Atlantic Ocean coastline. The largest concentration (14) of J/80s are in Marion, MA on Buzzards Bay and race One-design Thursday evenings under the Beverly Yacht Club banner. Buzzards Bay is ideal sailing territory with typical thermal winds out of the Southwest every day and summertime water temps in the low 70's. Marion has over 1,000 moorings, 95% of which are sailboats, as well as Barden's Boatyard, which has a drysail program for many J/80s and J/24s.

One can sail from Marion to Newport, RI in about 6 hours and travel North thru the cape cod canal to Boston, also in about 6 hours. Most of the other 80s in fleet 12 race handicap from Scituate, to Marblehead, and to a growing fleet in Boston Harbor. At Boston's  Courageous Sailing Center you can rent a J80.

​BYC and fleet 12 have won the two past North American class champions. Current North American Champ, Henry Tomlinson won in 2019 on Aegir at J-Jam. The 2018 J/80 North American Championship was hosted by Fleet 12 and BYC, where past commodore Chip Johns won on Cavitica (702) at BYC.
